A tricky fixture for two teams stacked together last season awaits on Saturday at Kassam Stadium as Oxford United host Portsmouth in the 2025-26 Championship matchday one. This match between the U’s and Pompey is likely to be tight, but our prediction is an away win.
This will be the second consecutive season in the Championship for both teams after winning promotion from League One together last year. Both teams finished one below another too, with Portsmouth ending last season in 16th place with 54 points and Oxford United right behind them in 17th with 53 points.
Oxford had a stronger finish than the poor start to the campaign last year, finishing the campaign with just one defeat from their final five games of the season. This time around, they wouldn’t want to leave things late.
Their form in the friendlies has been ambivalent, though, as the U’s could win just two of their five such games (W2, D2, L1).
