Liverpool vs Luton Town Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

Liverpool face Luton Town on Wednesday night in the Premier League this week having moved the fixture from the weekend due to their Carabao Cup Final appearance. The Reds remain top of the Premier League after their excellent 4-1 win at Brentford at the weekend, although having lost Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones to injuries and Darwin Nunez being taken off at half time, the victory wasn't without cost. They face Luton Town side unbeaten in their last three away games (2 draws, 1 win) but who remain 17th in the table a point ahead of Everton following their 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United at the weekend.

Liverpool - Luton Town: Form Analysis

Liverpool come into this game in good form, especially at home where they have not been beaten this season and where they have dropped just four points in the entire campaign. Since successive draws at Anfield against Man Utd and Arsenal, the Reds have won their last three home league games comfortably putting four past Newcastle and Chelsea, and then three past Burnley. Defensively, Liverpool do give the opposition both chances to score - teams have scored in all of the last six Liverpool games in all competitions and seven of their last eight games have all seen over 2.5 goals scored, with six of those games seeing over 3.5 goals scored. With such a formidable home record, stretching back many seasons now, Liverpool will start this game as the huge favorites to land the win.

After a fine run of games in all competitions that saw Luton Town go six games unbeaten (winning 3, drawing 3), the Hatters have lost their last two games at home. A surprise 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United was followed at the weekend by a 2-1 loss to Manchester United. Those two results don't set Luton up too promisingly for this trip to Anfield, a ground on which they have never won (all 7 of their wins over Liverpool coming at Kenilworth Road). Despite that, Luton can point to being unbeaten in their last three away games in the Premier League, a victory on Merseyside over Everton earlier this season and a very good performance at home against the Reds when the two teams drew 1-1 in November, with Luis Diaz injury time goal snatching a point for Liverpool.

Liverpool & Luton Town Squad Analysis

Liverpool's injury crisis took a turn for the worse in the weekend win at Brentford. Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones both joined a growing injury list and both are highly unlikely to feature against Luton or in the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday. They join a number of other Reds stars out for those games including Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic. Darwin Nunez was taken off as a precaution at half time against Brentford, while Dominic Szoboszlai will almost certainly miss the Luton game but could be in contention for a start against Chelsea depending on how his hamstring injury progresses. On the positive side for Liverpool, talisman Mo Salah returned to action from injury at the weekend, scoring one goal and landing an assist for another, while Andy Robertson played the full game at left back.

Luton may have Daiki Hashioka available for the game with Liverpool, although his chances are rated as no more than 50/50. Captain Tom Lockyer remains out as he continues his recovery from his heart condition and Marvelos Nakamba is out for the long term too with a knee injury. Mads Anderson could make his return from injury, but he may have to settle for a place on the bench at best. Elijah Adebayo withdrew from the starting XI to face Manchester United at the weekend after insulting his hamstring in the warm up. He is now a huge doubt for the game at Anfield with Cauley Woodrow likely to deputize once again. Ross Barkley has been Luton Town's most influential player this season with his excellent form in midfield leading to calls for England boss Gareth Southgate to consider him for the Three Lions squad once again.

Liverpool - Luton Town Key Points

  1. Liverpool are unbeaten in 12 home games this season in the Premier League, winning 10, drawing 2. They have lost twice in front of fans at Anfield in the Premier League since April 2017. (Their six defeats at home in 2020/21 were played in an empty stadium due to Covid).
  2. Luton are unbeaten in their last three away games, beating Sheffield United and drawing with both Burnley and Newcastle United. They have already won on Merseyside this season, beating Everton 2-1 back in September 2023.
  3. Liverpool have scored 20 goals in their last six Premier League games, conceding 8. They have won six of their last seven games, their only defeat a 3-1 loss away to Arsenal. Both teams have scored in five of the last six while tehre has been over 3.5 goals in all the last six games involving the Reds.
  4. Luton have one win in the last six, scoring 13 goals and conceding the same number. Both teams have scored in 5 of their last 6 games, while there has been over 2.5 goals in 10 of the last 12 games involving the Hatters.
  5. Luton have won just one of the last 11 games between the two, a 3-1 win at Kenilworth Road in February 1991. Liverpool have won five of those games with five finishing as a draw, including November's clash between the two which finished 1-1.

Our Liverpool vs Luton Town Prediction

Liverpool v Luton Town on Wednesday night should, if the stats prove to be an accurate predictor of the game, result in a home win. However, while Liverpool are scoring plenty of goals at present, they will be mindful of their injury situation ahead of the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday. Luton do score goals at home and on the road and I can see them finding the net at Anfield here. They gave a good account of themselves when drawing with Liverpool earlier in the season. That said, our prediction for Liverpool v Luton Town is still for the Reds to land the win at home, but also for both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Luton Town - Other Interesting Predictions

Correct Score Bet - Liverpool to Win 3-1

Liverpool have not found goals difficult to come by even with Mo Salah out for the African Cup of Nations and then with injury. Luton too are always likely to grab a goal and so this is a game where the stats suggest both teams will score, but that Liverpool should land the win. That is of course our main bet, but data suggests you can narrow the correct score of this game down a little. Our secondary prediction for Liverpool v Luton Town therefore is for Liverpool to win the game 3-1 as a correct score bet.

Luis Diaz (Liverpool) to score at any time

With Diogo Jota ruled out and Darwin Nunez perhaps unlikely to start, the goalscoring will fall on Mo Salah for the game with Luton although he should have plenty of support from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. Diaz is an intriguing option here as he has not scored as many goals this season as many would have expected, but he is playing regularly now and starting to get back to his very best. He also scored against Luton in the 1-1 draw in November and our third Liverpool v Luton prediction here is for Luis Diaz to score at any time for Liverpool.

Liverpool to Score a Penalty

Liverpool have been awarded a penalty in half of their home games in the Premier League this season, landing six penalties in 12 games. Away from home that figure dwindles to 1 in 13, which does suggest the intense Anfield atmosphere can prey on the minds of officials. Stats suggest that it is 50/50 Liverpool will be awarded a penalty in a home game this season, so our last prediction for Liverpool v Luton is not just for Liverpool to be awarded a penalty, but also to score from it.

2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

bet365 2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

One of the worst feelings when placing a football bet is when the team that you have backed has gone into a multiple-goal lead only to be clawed back to a draw or to lose the game in question. This is something that bet365 has rectified for their bettors courtesy of this offer. If the team that you backed takes a two-goal lead your bet will be paid out as a winner. That is any two-goal lead so 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 etc will all be paid out early as a winner if your team is in that position. This is available in 80 different competitions including the major leagues across Europe and can be played on the full-time result market. Singles and multiples are both valid for this offer but you cannot bet on enhanced price markets. As with most promotions, if you cash out a bet in full, the bet will no longer be available for the offer in question. It also cannot be used if you bet on the draw on a game.

Liverpool vs Luton Town match : Frequently asked questions

Andy Madley will once again officiate Liverpool taking on Luton, having officiated the reverse fixture back on the 5th November 2023. He has also overseen the Reds two away wins against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth this season, but this will be his first time officiating at Anfield in this campaign. It will be his second time refereeing Luton Town this season.

Mr Madley has officiated 15 times in the Premier League this season, handing out 69 yellow cards (4.6 on average per game) and two red cards.

Eddie Smart and Nick Hopton will be his assistant referees at Anfield, with Tom Bramall taking on duties as fourth official at the stadium. Simon Hooper will be the VAR official, with Darren Cann assisting.

Reds fans will not be happy at Hooper's appointment to VAR as he was the official who disallowed Luis Diaz valid goal at Tottenham, as well as sending off two Liverpool players in that game.

Liverpool have gone 12 games unbeaten at Anfield in the Premier League this season and they have also not lost a game in the Europa League, Carabao Cup or FA Cup at home over the course of the season.

They are unbeaten in 27 home games in all competitions, their last defeat at home coming in the Champions League Round of 16 when they were beaten 5-2 by Real Madrid a year ago to the day of the game with Luton Town.

Their last defeat at home in the Premier League was back on 29th October 2022, when Leeds United earned a 2-1 win at Anfield tanks to Crysencio Summerville's 89th minute winner.

Unfortunately, the Liverpool vs Luton Town game will not be shown live on TV in the United Kingdom. Live radio commentary will be available from Talksport across the United Kingdom.

However, if you want to keep up to the minute with all the action at Anfield on Wednesday night, tune in to the Liverpool v Luton Livescore page for real-time updates and text highlights of the game as it happens. It may not be the same as watching live, but it is definitely the next best thing!
