American teenager Learner Tien bids to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter-final. The unseeded player must beat 16th seed Daniil Medvedev to reach the last eight. Here’s our match prediction.
Tien is having an excellent run of form in this Asian swing. A quarter-final in Hangzhou was followed by a run to the final in Beijing. The latter tournament saw the 19-year-old get a win over Medvedev taking his record against the Russian to 2-0.
In the last eight, the winner of this match will face either seventh seed Alex de Minaur or unseeded Nuno Borges. So far in Shanghai, Tien has had victories over Miomir Kecmanovic, 33rd seed Corentin Moutet (both in three sets) and 30th-seeded Cameron Norrie. He’s up to 37th in the live rankings.
Daniil Medvedev won this title six years ago and was a quarter-finalist in 2024. The Russian is 21-13 on hard courts this year. He lost to Tien in the Beijing semi-final but retired with the match one set all.
Before that he’d got to the last eight in Hangzhou. He’s beaten Dalibor Svcrina and 18th seed Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina without losing a set. There are therefore signs that he is beginning to find some better form.
