Stage 18 of La Vuelta is the second of the Individual Time Trials but this one is a very different test at more than three times the length and far less technical. That should suit the pure power of Ethan Hayter.
Hayter was runner-up on Stage 1 behind Tadej Pogacar, beaten a hair on the clock but in front of the likes of Joshua Tarling who is an exceptional time trialist. Both of those are no longer in the contest which means that Hayter is a very strong candidate.
When it comes to sheer power, Stefan Kung has to be mentioned as one of the leaders in the peloton. He has 31 professional wins to his credit, with 20 of those coming in an individual time trial! This is his bread and butter and a big showing is expected.
Wout van Aert is another smart time trialist and he should be in the mix. He is still the green jersey leader by 43 points and there are a few more points up for grabs here, so a strong performance in this stage is important to him.
If Primoz Roglic is going to win a fifth Vuelta then he needs to close the gap of more than two minutes that Enric Mas currently has over him. He took two minutes out of Mas in the time trial that concluded the 2021 renewal, winning the stage and the overall title.

- There are 32.1km to cover on this individual time trial ahead of heading back into the mountains.
- Just 169 vertical metres of climbing have to be done so it is almost pan flat which makes it a real test of sheer power and speed.
- Ethan Hayter has become a time trial specialist. He has 25 wins in his career, eight in an individual time trial, with his last six wins all in this discipline.
- Hayter was second on the only other time trial in this race. The riders who finished first, third and fifth are no longer in the race.
