A tricky start to their Group D campaign awaits defending champions England as they begin their 2025 Women's Euro against France at Stadion Letzigrund on Saturday. Wales and the Netherlands are the other two teams in this group where the top two sides advance to the quarter-finals. Read more for our match prediction.
France are looking for their first Euro title and couldn't have had a better run of results. Coming into the finals, they have won eight games in a row, which is their best run of consecutive victories since July 2022. That also included winning the group stages of the Nations League undefeated. That should worry England in a 'Group of Death' as they look to defend their European Championship title.
The last team to do so was Germany in 2013, so the pressure is on England to start well. France W - England W: Form Analysis
France defeated Brazil 3-2 in their last friendly before the finals, which was preceded by a 5-0 drubbing they handed to Belgium. Les Bleues have now won eight matches in a row, giving them enough ammunition to surprise England.
That run of wins included six in the UEFA Women's Nations League, making them the first women’s team in the history of League A to sail through a group stage winning all matches. It is their poor historical form in this competition that poses a challenge, though.
France suffered eight consecutive knockout eliminations in the Euros and FIFA World Cup.
That's reason enough for England to be cheerful, as they look to become the first team since 2013 to defend their title in the Women's Euros. They warmed up with a 7-0 demolition of Jamaica, but results haven't been consistent around that win.
England have managed to win three, but two defeats in their last five matches mean they aren't runaway favourites to win against France. Having created history with a first-ever competitive title in the last edition, England will hope to keep their scoring record intact at least, having netted in 16 of their last six competitive games.

France coach Laurent Bonadei made a few bold decisions dropping captain Wendie Renard and all-time top goal scorer Eugenie Le Sommer from the squad. There are doubts over the availability of captain and defender Griedge Mbock, who is racing against time to get fit for the opening game.
The French women are likely to be in a 4-3-3 formation, although in recent times, they have also used the 4-2-3-1 shape. That leaves Chelsea's Sandy Baltimore on the left wing as a crucial player for the French.
