England got off to a good start in the First Test reducing Australia to 122-8 in their first innings. However, England hadn't dismissed Steve Smith and his century went on to rescue his team. They went on to make 284 all out but England still managed to get a first innings lead of 90 with Rory Burns hitting a maiden test century. England's bowlers had a disappointing second innings though, particularly spinner Moeen Ali. With James Anderson being injured in the first innings, Australia took full advantage scoring 487-7 declared in their second innings with Steve Smith again scoring a century.. England were never in the hunt in their second innings and were dismissed for 146 with Nathan Lyon taking 6-49.
England have made two changes for this match. James Anderson is injured and the out-of-form Moeen Ali dropped. Jofra Archer is expected to make his test debut and Jack Leach is recalled. Will that be enough to give England a chance of winning this game? Their batting line-up is still fragile and that's a major worry. Jason Roy can't be forgiven for how he was dismissed in the second innings and Joe Denly, Johnny Bairstow and Jos Buttler are all struggling for form. England will probably need some help to avoid defeat and the weather looks the answer. Rain is forecast for the first, fourth and fifth days of the game so a bet on a draw looks a good one.
