Manchester City will look to continue their strong start to the Premier League season when they host Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Citizens won this fixture 3-0 last season, and we’re going for a similar outcome as our main prediction in this match.
After Pep Guardiola’s departure and with the team losing the Community Shield 3-0 to Arsenal, there were serious concerns surrounding Man City’s title chances this season. However, those concerns are now starting to fade, with Enzo Maresca leading his new side to six consecutive wins across all competitions coming into this weekend’s clash.
The Black Cats start Matchday 5 in 14th place with four points following a 2-0 defeat to the Gunners at home last week. While they did take a point off this opponent at home last term, they have failed to score against City in their last three encounters and have not beaten the Sky Blues on the road since 1998, when both teams were still in the EFL Championship. Manchester City - Sunderland: Form Analysis
With a major slice of luck and plenty of controversy, Manchester City kept their perfect start to the Premier League season intact by beating cross-town rivals Manchester United 1-0 last weekend.
However, the Citizens needed no assistance to progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, as they completely dominated Norwich City en route to a commanding 5-0 victory.
The hosts have won all three of their home games across all competitions this season and have only suffered one loss at the Etihad Stadium in their last nine competitive games since mid-March (W8).
Man City are unbeaten in their last 14 EPL matches against Sunderland (W12 D2)!
Meanwhile, despite losing 2-0 to Arsenal last week, the scoreline did not tell the full story about Sunderland’s performance, as they recorded 1.80 xG and created three big chances against the Gunners.
The Black Cats then got their first taste of the Europa League in midweek and marked the occasion with a memorable result, beating AZ Alkmaar 1-0, though they did underperform their 2.96 xG.
However, most of Sunderland’s best work over the past two seasons has been done at home. They have taken one point from their two away games this term and managed just five league wins on the road last season.

Manchester City & Sunderland Squad Analysis
Maresca opted for wholesale changes against Norwich, which included handing debuts to Floyd Samba and Allan Elias. Both players got on the scoresheet in that match, but neither are expected to make the starting 11 this weekend.
Erling Haaland netted the winner against Man United last week and leads the EPL with four goals. Notably, of the 25 teams he has faced in the English top flight, Sunderland is the only side he has not scored against, and the Norwegian will want to change that this weekend.
Phil Foden was shown a straight red in the Manchester derby and will begin his suspension this week. Jeremy Doku has not featured since the Community Shield due to injury, but could return to the bench here.
Haaland has scored four goals from nine shots on target in the EPL this season!
Regis Le Bris gave Wilson Isidor a start in the Europa League in midweek, but Brian Brobbey should return to lead the line here. The Dutchman was a handful for the Gunners' defence last week, especially with his physicality that led to 10 duels won.
Keep an eye on Nordi Mukiele. The French fullback was extremely attacking last weekend and ended the game against Arsenal with 0.70 xG and four shots, three of which were from inside the box
The visitors have three confirmed absentees for this trip to the Etihad, with Romaine Mundle and Habib Diarra ruled out through injury, while Reinildo Mandava is suspended until after the international break.

Our Manchester City vs Sunderland Prediction
Barring the loss to Ipswich on the opening weekend, Sunderland have looked good over the early stages of the season, but it will be interesting to see how they fare from here on with European competition now in full swing.
Manchester City were able to give their big hitters the night off in midweek, meaning they will enter this match well-rested and ready to go. The Citizens have dominated this fixture over the years, and we fancy them to bag at least a couple of goals en route to a victory. Our Manchester City vs Sunderland prediction is Manchester City to score 2-4 goals.
