French and European champions PSG will travel down to Marseille to take on Olympique Marseille in Le Classique this Sunday. This is a derby classified more for its rivalry than geographical confines, as it features the country’s two most successful clubs.
That’s the historical part, but in recent years, PSG have soared clear in terms of dominating French and European football. For both sides at these early stages of the season, things have been a bit complicated, but it is PSG who will head into this encounter the more confident. It should be so, as they recently ended their winless run domestically while starting their Champions League title defence on a high.
Meanwhile, Les Phocéens carried their domestic woes to the European stage as a loss in the Europa League stretched their losing run to four straight outings. Facing a PSG side they have lost to in eight of 10 league meetings is almost a guarantee they’ll lose, but our prediction also delves into the goals market.

Marseille - PSG: Form Analysis
Marseille will arrive for another Le Classique derby as underdogs following an underwhelming run so far in the season. It wasn’t always a poor start to the campaign for the hosts, though. They began with an emphatic 4-0 victory at home against Strasbourg, but all went flat thereafter.
Bruno Génésio's men lost three straight league matches, failing to score in two before embarking on another losing start in Europe. Les Phocéens are coming off a 4-1 defeat away against Besiktas in the Europa League. This is barely the warmup anyone needs ahead of a match against the champions. It isn’t just the defeats Marseille will be worried about but the number of goals they’ve been conceding. In the last four games, they’ve let in 10 goals.
Marseille have conceded 2.5 goals per game in the last four.
PSG had an underwhelming start to the season, especially domestically, but in the past few weeks there has been relative calm. The champions are slowly getting their groove back after a win in the Champions League and another in Ligue 1. Les Parisiens went winless in their opening three league games, losing once, to mark their slowest start since 2011/12.
A 2-1 defeat to Monaco was awakening, and they responded with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the UCL. They would then beat Brest 1-0, and this away game offers a chance to further stabilize things. Luis Enrique’s men will not feel pressured by an away trip, having won five of the last eight in Ligue 1.

Marseille & PSG Squad Analysis
Marseille have struggled in this fixture, and facing PSG at this time could be the needed encounter to jumpstart their system. There won’t be a better player to rely on to unlock PSG than Amine Gouiri. The Algerian forward has been Marseille’s main man, and he will be the go-to guy here as well, having scored four goals in four league games.
Those have come in two braces, with one being a double the last time they hosted a team from the capital, Paris FC. Marseille lost that game but will be hoping his goals come with a winning outing, like it was in the case against Strasbourg on matchday one.
In his first five games for PSG, Ferran Torres has scored six times.
After starting and playing full time in Marseille’s opening five games, things started slowing down for defender Achraf Hakimi. In the massive Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava, he was replaced after 64 minutes even though he had a satisfactory performance. In the club’s most recent outing, however, he lasted just 39 minutes and will likely miss out completely this time. The Moroccan is battling a thigh injury that could keep him out for the first time this season.
Ferran Torres will get a first taste of this derby and will be looking to extend his good start at the club. The Spaniard has already helped himself to three league goals and has the best xG in the team at 1.4 per game.

Our Marseille vs PSG Prediction
While PSG haven’t had the best of starts domestically, they remain one of the most formidable setups around. Marseille conceding 10 times in the last four matches just before meeting PSG doesn’t look great on the hosts.
As Marseille are missing key defenders, this match is already starting to look like it will be defined by the number of goals scored. Notably, both sides haven’t been at their best defensively, so backing both to score could be a good bet. However, based on recent outcomes, our prediction for Marseille v PSG is for the game to have over 3.5 goals.
Marseille vs PSG Alternative Predictions
PSG wins
Our second bet on this match will be for PSG to win. That is almost a no-brainer, with the visitors having dominated this encounter for the better part of the last decade. PSG will arrive for this game having beaten Marseille in eight of their last 10 meetings. They only lost once in that stretch, which happens to be the last time they visited this host.
