After contrasting draws from matchday one, Belgium and Iran will be desperate for their first win of the 2026 World Cup on Sunday in Los Angeles. Group G is finely balanced with all four teams on one point each, with the 'Red Devils' starting this round in third place and the 'Persian Cheetahs' in second. This match could be crucial for the progression hopes of both teams, so will it meet expectations with an exciting contest?

Belgium relied on Romelu Lukaku's performance to come back and draw 1-1 against Egypt. That extended their impressive record in the group stages of World Cup competitions, but another draw here will put pressure on their top-two chances when they face New Zealand on matchday three.

Iran also clawed back from a deficit, once in each half, to draw 2-2 against New Zealand in their first game. A victory here would enhance their chances of advancing beyond the group stage for the first time, but can they maintain their pursuit? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Belgium - Iran: Form Analysis

Belgium conceded in the 20th minute to go 1-0 behind against Egypt, and only a 66th-minute own goal saved them the blushes. They are still unbeaten since March 2025, winning nine and drawing five, although they haven't been dominating matches.

Matchday one was also the fifth time in their last eight matches that Belgium have failed to keep a clean sheet. Improving at the back could be their way to improve, as the 'Red Devils' look to arrest the run of draws.

Belgium drew seven of their last 16 World Cup group stage games.

Iran had to come from behind twice to draw 2-2 against New Zealand and ended the game with better stats. They had more expected goals (1.50) and total shots (17); although with only four shots on target, the room for improvement is obvious.

The 'Persian Cheetahs' are also unbeaten in their last four matches (W3, D1), while a run of just one defeat during regulation time over their last eight games (W4, D3) is a sign of their dogged displays.

Belgium & Iran Squad Analysis

The Belgians played their usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Charles de Ketelaere lining up as the lone striker. Romelu Lukaku wasn't fit to start, but his performance after replacing Ketelaere could see him push for a starting berth.

Coach Rudi Garcia could still opt to use Lukaku as a super sub. Zeno Debast missed Egypt's clash with a leg injury and remains the only worry for the Red Devils ahead of this contest.

Lukaku's five World Cup goals have come in three Belgium wins.

Iran played the traditional 4-4-2 system rather than the 4-2-3-1 formation that they have been using lately. This allowed them to start both Mehdi Taremi and Shahriyar Moghanlou in the final third.

It was the full-back Ramin Rezaeian who stole the show for the Iranians, as he scored and assisted one goal each in their draw. He also created history by becoming the first player to score and assist in a World Cup match for Iran.

Belgium - Iran Key Points

  1. Three of Belgium’s last five matches saw both teams score goals.
  2. Belgium have scored in eight consecutive matches.
  3. Iran saw both teams score goals in three of their last five matches.
  4. Iran have scored at least two goals in their last four matches.

Our Belgium vs Iran Prediction

Belgium had a tough game against Egypt, failing to assert themselves, and were only saved by Romelu Lukaku's brilliance. They had an underwhelming exit in the last World Cup, and avoiding the same fate could hinge on finding a positive result here. Iran were the entering side against New Zealand and have shown enough hunger to score goals. While their logistical issues cast a shadow over their preparations, Iran are still a strong opponent for Belgium.

Both these teams have had defensive concerns lately while being able to score consistently, and so our Belgium vs Iran prediction is BTTS.
