League One side Barnsley will welcome Championship side Sheffield United at Oakley on Tuesday for a second round League Cup match. By virtue of playing in a higher league, predictions favor The Blades beating The Tykes. It doesn’t always turn out that way but let’s have a look at the preview.
To advance here, Barnsley eliminated Wigan Athletic on penalties after a 1-1 draw. That was one of their five matches so far in the 2024/25 campaign and they’ve scored in all. While Darrel Clarke will be pleased with his team’s scoring run, they haven't done well in defence.
Barnsley arrive for this game still searching for their first clean sheet. In three of their five matches, they conceded more than a goal but also scored twice in each of the last three outings.
Sheffield United have two straight wins against Barnsley and will be keen on extending this run. However, in their last trip to Oakley, they suffered a 3-2 defeat. Coming here on an unbeaten start to the season will boost their confidence, though their defence won’t inspire much of that.
The visitors haven't tasted defeat in their four matches so far, but only one of those matches returned a clean sheet. They rallied from behind to beat Wrexham 4-2 in the first round of this competition.
In the two matches that came after that, they could only manage draws. The most recent of them was a 1-1 outcome away to Norwich. Like their hosts, Sheffield United will be happy with their scoring form thus far. They also scored in all their last four meetings with Barnsley.
