11th seeded Alex de Minaur faces unseeded Alex Michelsen in round one at Roland Garros. Spanish opposition is scheduled for the winner of this match, either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jaume Munar. Alex de Minaur is playing at Roland Garros for the eight time in his career but is yet to get past round two of the French Open. He's the world number 11 but at eighth position in the Live ATP Race. He is far better on hard and grass courts but is still a very capable player on clay. This year has seen him get to the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and the last 16 in both Barcelona and Rome. He beat Rafael Nadal in Barcelona but lost to him in Madrid. There's been one previous meeting with Michelsen and that was played this year. The Australian beat Michelsen in Los Cabos but that was played on a hard court.

Alex Michelsen is making his first appearance at Roland Garros. The American is the world number 60 and a couple of places below that in the ATP Live Race. He's had a steady but unspectacular year and hasn't had too impressive a clay court season. He's played in six tournaments and his best performance has been getting to the last 16 in Munich, though he only had to win one match to get that far. His most recent clay court tournament was in Geneva where he lost in round two to the third seed Taylor Fritz in three sets after winning the first.
