Two underperforming teams in the East clash on Wednesday morning as the 28-22-4 New Jersey Devils travel to the capital to play the 24-21-8 Washington Capitals. The Caps are still in the hunt for a wildcard playoff spot as things stand but they need to put some wins together. Putting the puck in the net has been the issue this season with a dramatic dropoff from captain Alex Ovechkin. He had shown no signs of slowing down in his chase of Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal-scoring record until this season, but the good news for Caps fans is that there have been definite signs of life since the All-Star Break. He has come back with a renewed purchase, scoring in six games straight until the Caps' recent defeat to Montreal. If the Caps are to make the playoffs, they will need Ovechkin to put the team on his back once more as he has done on so many occasions through the years but the recent form of the team has to raise some doubts over whether they are capable.
A Stadium Series win over the Philadelphia Flyers will have given the Devils some confidence. They have been inconsistent in front of the net of late, in their last seven games they have netted six, five and four in three of them but one and zero in another two. The game that they were shutout they lost 1-0 in overtime and the game they scored one, they only shipped two so their defence has kept them in both games which is a surprise given only six teams have conceded more goals this season. That does make them a very hard team to predict as they have pretty much been alternating wins and losses so far in 2024. They won the last time that they were in Washington so perhaps that will stand them in good stead from a confidence standpoint.
