The AFC Asian Cup enters the final group stage match as third-placed Syria take on fourth-place India in Group B. With the best third-place qualifying team structure, a win for Syria would move them to four points and ensure they are taking part in the round of 16 . India, who have yet to earn a point in this year’s tournament, will need a victory here to ensure they have any chance of advancing on. They’ll also likely need to do so by a significant margin as their -5 goal differential puts them in a desperate situation. This is the first time these nations will have met since 2019 in a match that ended 1-1.

Syria were defeated 1-0 by Australia in their last match despite a valiant effort. Coming into the match as heavy underdogs, the Qasioun Eagles were able to effectively limit the Socceroos attacking potential as they held them to 10 total shots and only one on target. Their sole point of the competition came in a 0-0 draw with Uzbekistan in matchday one. It hasn’t been the best past few months for Syria who haven’t recorded a win since November of 2023. India come into this match needing what would be only the second victory for the nation in the AFC Asia Cup in the last 55 years. The Blue Tigers entered this tournament on a poor streak of form which has unfortunately carried over into the group stage. India lost four of their final five matches in the build up to the Asian Cup and have suffered defeat in both of their group stage matches. The first was a 2-0 loss to Australia while Uzbekistan would inflict a 3-0 beatdown on them in their most recent outing. The result needs India needing a historic win by a massive margin if they are to keep their title hopes alive.
