We’re into the second matchday of the league phase in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday with Sturm Graz hosting Rangers. It’s the first ever meeting between Die Schwoazn and the Gers as both teams seek their first points of the campaign. Check out our match prediction below!
Sturm Graz have made excellent progress in the last few years. They displaced RB Salzburg from the Austrian Bundesliga summit with back-to-back league titles and returned to the Champions League last season for the first time in nearly 25 years. Fans will be hoping that the next step can be a deep run in European competition, and the Europa League presents a good opportunity for just that.
Finalists in this competition in the 2021-22 season, Rangers look a long way off reaching those heights once again. The calls to sack manager Russell Martin are growing after a nightmare start, which included the third-largest aggregate defat in Champions League history (9-1 vs Club Brugge) in the qualifying playoff. Three points here would go a long way to alleviating some of the pressure.

Sturm Graz - Rangers: Form Analysis
Sturm Graz were able to get back to winning ways at the weekend with a late stoppage time winner to claim a 1-0 home league victory over Hartberg. They’ve now managed to win three of their last four overall, with their only dropped points during that time being the 2-0 away loss to Danish side Midtjylland in the UEL opener.
Sturm Graz performed better than their 2-0 defeat to Midtjylland would suggest.
Indeed, the Austrian’s champions did a commendable job in limiting a Midtjylland side that is always dangerous at home to just 0.56 expected goals, while creating 0.91 xG themselves. They’ll be hoping to build on that as they return home here with a golden opportunity to earn three points.
Rangers also left it late in Sunday’s 2-1 away win over Livingston to finally get their first win of the league season at the sixth time of asking with a stoppage time winner. With a 1-4-1 record in the Scottish Premiership, they already find themselves nine points behind rivals Celtic.
Martin has now managed just five wins from his first 15 games in charge across all competitions which includes just a single victory in six away fixtures. On the bright side, the visitors have won two of their last three outings overall. Rangers kicked off their UEL league phase with a 1-0 home defeat to Genk and weren’t able to recover after a first-half red card.

Sturm Graz & Rangers Squad Analysis
Sturm Graz boss Jurgen Saumel comes into this match with three players listed on the injury report. Striker Axel Kayombo, goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov and right back Arjan Malic all look set to miss out.
Rangers will have to key in on attacking midfielder Otar Kiteishvili if they are to get anything out of this match. Kiteishvili was suspended in their UEL opener, which was a major reason why they failed to get on the scoresheet.
Otar Kiteishvili is the creative spark for the hosts and leads the team with five goals in eight appearances.
The 29-year-old pulls the strings in the number 10 role in Sturm’s usual 4-1-2-1-2 formation, providing service to strikers Jatta and Malone.
Russell Martin will be unable to call upon three as well, with Lyall Cameron, Rabbi Matondo and Dujon Sterling all injured. They’ll also be without Mohammed Diomande, who is suspended after receiving a straight red card in the defeat to Genk.
In an attempt to solve some of their goalscoring woes, Rangers brought in Youssef Chermiti from Everton in a deal worth €10 million, the second-highest transer in club history. Chermiti has struggled to make an impact in his four appearances so far, although only one came as a starter.

Our Sturm Graz vs Rangers Prediction
The hosts have a rock-solid defense and deserved at least a point in their opening match with Midtjylland. Should they replicate a similar type of defensive performance, then they should be able to effectively contain a Rangers side that has been struggling for consistent goal output lately.
It’s another difficult spot for Russell Martin and his Rangers team. They’ve failed to find the net in four of their last six outings and the Sturm Graz defense won’t do them any favours here. Back this to be low-scoring. Our Sturm Graz vs Rangers prediction: under 2.5.Sturm Graz vs Rangers - Other Interesting Predictions
