Eighth seed Stan Wawrinka will on Wednesday square off with the unseeded Luca Van Assche at the Moselle Open. The two will battle in the second round with the winner going on to play either Alex de Minaur or Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Stan Wawrinka ended a run of three successive defeats by winning his opening round here. He defeated Bernabe Zapata Miralles by the loss of just two games to begin his fifth appearance in Metz. Wawrinka made it to the semifinals here last season. He will hope for another deep run and possibly win his first title of the season. The legendary Swiss is back in the ATP top 50 and is currently ranked 49th in the live ranking. He has compiled a 29-23 record with eight of his wins coming on indoor hard courts.

Luca Van Assche defeated Wawrinka earlier this year on clay in Banja Luka. This was their first ever encounter and he will hope for the same outcome to double his advantage in this series. Van Assche had to come from a set down to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets in the first round. The Frenchman has also struggled with his form lately and the win put to a halt a three-match losing spell. But as he has performed strongly on indoor hard courts, he will be confident of a prolonged run in Metz. Van Assche has recorded 12 victories in his 18 outings on the surface resulting in one challenger title. The 19-year-old is ranked 70th in the ATP.
