Spain and Portugal face each other in the final game in the Main Round of the Men’s European Handball Championships. Both countries are unable to reach the semi-finals but could reach the fifth/sixth place play-offs. Time for our match prediction.
Portugal are fifth in the group but only a point behind third placed France. A win here could yet see them finish third and qualify for the fifth/sixth place play-off. They started these championships well by winning Preliminary Round Group B with two wins and a draw.
In this Main Round group, it’s been tougher for them with losses to Germany and France and drawing with Norway.
Spain are bottom of the group with only a couple of points. They are a point behind Portugal and fourth placed Norway and two adrift of France who are third. Having beaten France earlier in this Main Round, they could yet finish third but need to win this match.
Spain came second behind Germany in Preliminary Round group A. They began these championships with victories over Serbia and Austria but lost to the Germans by a two-goal margin. In the Main Round, the Spaniards lost to Norway (by a single goal) and Denmark before beating France.
We tip them to get the win here.

Our Spain vs Portugal Prediction
This is the first of the final set of games in this group. Both countries are still in with a chance of making it into the fifth/sixth place play-off. A draw would end those hopes. Spain are bottom of the group but had a good win over France in their most recent match.
Portugal have struggled in this group and are conceding too many goals This could be a close match and low stakes are probably a good idea here. Our Spain v Portugal prediction is Spain wins.
