The Hollywood dream of Wrexham moves to the EFL Championship as they start their 2025-26 campaign with a matchday one fixture against Southampton on Saturday. This match at St Mary’s Stadium comes with our prediction of both the Saints and the Red Dragons finding goals.
There’s so much on the table for this season for both teams. Southampton are smarting from the Premier League relegation last season, where they were made to look like novices. Wrexham are riding the crest of three consecutive promotions, and the buzz around the club is already about another promotion. While that script would be straight out of their wildest dreams, a win here will make the entire league sit up and take notice of the ambitious Welsh visitors.
There are some interesting summer additions at Wrexham, while Southampton are regrouping under a highly rated young manager in Will Still. This match could just be the recipe for what the season holds for these two sides. Read further for our team news, analysis, and match predictions.

Southampton - Wrexham: Form Analysis
Going just by the results of their friendlies, Southampton don’t look like a team to beat! They could win only two of their six friendlies in the pre-season, drawing three and losing one.
Five of those matches saw goals from both teams of the day, and that could be the case here once again. A positive result here will be much-needed as they look to improve on a return of just 12 points from 38 league games last year.
Wrexham are in the Championship for the first time in 43 years!
The Red Dragons are chasing a fourth successive promotion, and the euphoria around the club could be pushing them. They went down under for a run of three friendlies, with indifferent results. Wrexham started with a 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory but soon lost steam.
Defeats to Sydney FC (0-2) and Wellington Phoenix (0-1) are a stark reminder of how things can go wrong, but Wrexham will look to put that experience behind.

Southampton & Wrexham Squad Analysis
Tyler Dibling is practising alone as he angles for a summer move away from Southampton. Ben Brereton has a hip injury and is unlikely to play this weekend. Questions remain over the fitness of Flynn Downes and Will Smallbone.
Southampton could line up in the 4-3-3 formation with Adam Armstrong leading the line slightly ahead of the two on the flanks. Cameron Archer on the right flank could be their source of goals, as he scored 11 and assisted six more when he last played at this level with Middlesbrough in 2022-23.
Wrexham were active in the summer, adding eight new signings.
As they look to make history with another consecutive promotion, the Welsh have signed the likes of Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, Danny Ward, Ryan Hardie, and Josh Windass.
Oliver Rathbone and Jay Rodriguez miss this game due to injuries, while Andy Cannon is a long-term absentee. Their 3-5-2 formation is likely to make it an open game, as the midfield mastery of Windass and Lewis O’Brien could push them the farthest on the field.

Our Southampton vs Wrexham Prediction
Wrexham captured the imagination of football lovers all over England by earning three successive promotions. Doing that for the fourth time in a row will be right out of a Hollywood dream, but their start could give a huge boost to their hopes. Southampton aren’t likely to dole out any favours, especially as the Saints are smarting from the Premier League relegation last year.
This game could still see some interesting action from both teams, and our Southampton vs Wrexham prediction is both teams to score.
Southampton vs Wrexham - Other Interesting Predictions
Southampton to win and over 2.5
For all the off-field hustle that Wrexham bring to the table and the stands, it’s Southampton who bring a balanced side to this game. The hosts struggled to keep a clean sheet at home last season in the Premier League but will look to start this campaign in the Championship on a high. Back the Saints to win in a match that could see over 2.5 goals.
