For the past three seasons the European Rugby Challenge Cup has been won by French sides. That run will come to an end this weekend. Sharks are the first South African side to reach the final of this competition. They too have had problems getting wins in their league season. Sharks are 13th in the United Rugby Championship with obly four wins in 17 fixtures. Three of their last four games in that league have been lost and sway form is poor. Their nine away games in the United Rugby Championship have produced just one victory. In the European Rugby Challenge Cup, they won Pool 1 with three wins out of four. Their only loss was at fellow South African side Cheetahs. All three of their knockout matches have been played at home with wins over Zebre Parma, Edinburgh and Clermont. Tha semi-final against Clermont was a real struggle as they trailed by ten points at the break and only won the match by a single point.
