The Sao Paulo fans will be thrilled coming into Sunday’s match. Their team was able squeeze by Atletico Nacional on penalties in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 following a 1-1 draw in the second leg. It marks the second year in a row that Sao Paulo have made it to this stage of the continent’s biggest club tournament.
On the domestic front, things are looking up as well. The Tricolor drew 2-2 away to Sport Recife last weekend, but they extended their unbeaten run to seven league matches, five of which resulted in victories.
Their opponents had continental success of their own in midweek, defeating Godoy Cruz 1-0 away from home to advance to the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.
In the league, however, Galo have managed just a single win in their last six outings with four of them ending in defeat. The visitors are in desperate need of three points to avoid slipping any further down the standings.
At 11th, Atletico Mineiro currently hold the second-to-last Copa Sudamericana qualifying spot, although the goal will be a top six finish and entry into the Libertadores.
