Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa will travel to Rennes as Group F action in the Europa League kicks off. This match will be played at the Roazhon Park on Thursday. The other two teams in the group are Villarreal and Panathinaikos. Rennes are making their fifth appearance in the Europa League group stage. Last season saw them qualify second from their group but lose in the knockout round play-off. Any hopes of starting well are boosted by their positive league start, winning one and drawing four in a row. Three of those games saw over 2.5 goals scored and that could be in play here once again. One thing in favour of the hosts is that Rennes are on a run of nine matches without defeat in Europe – winning five and drawing four.

Maccabi started this season in the Champions League qualifying rounds, where they reached the playoffs after three straight wins. However, they were beaten by Young Boys and that saw them drop down to Europa League. This is just the third time they are in the group stages of this competition and the first time in ten years. They would be keen to better the third-place finish achieved in both the previous times. Recent form is a challenge though, as Maccabi have lost two and drew one of their last four competitive matches winning just once. Their run in the Europa League saw them win six and lost two of their last eight matches. It is their away form that is of concern though, as Maccabi have lost ten of their last 15 away European games.
