by Nella Wagah in World Cup Predictions
Nigeria will take on Gabon in the first of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification playoff semi-finals in the CAF region. This match will be hosted at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday. Read on for our prediction.
These two nations get a second bite of the qualification cherry after failing to secure slots for the global event through their respective groups. This isn’t the route either nation would have wanted, but it is a welcome chance, one of the benefits of the expanded World Cup. Nigeria finished second in Group C with 17 points, while Gabon managed second in Group F with 25 points.
The winner in this one-legged semi will proceed to the final to face either Cameroon or DR Congo. The final winner will still have some journey before the World Cup. They will meet up in another mini tournament with two teams from the CONCACAF and one each from Asia, Oceania, and South America. That will mark the final round of qualifiers and complete the World Cup 2026 brackets.

Nigeria - Gabon: Form Analysis
In the draw for this, the FIFA rankings at the time were used to determine the pairings, with the highest ranked facing the lowest ranked. That’s how Nigeria (41st) booked Gabon (77th).
Nigeria has, on paper, the strongest team at this stage of the qualifiers. However, their points tally was the lowest among the teams here.
Their group stage performances weren’t the most solid, as the Super Eagles had three different coaches to take them through. Under current manager Eric Chelle, they are unbeaten in five competitive matches.
To book this slot, they thumped Benin 4-0 in the final group game.
Nigeria finished second to South Africa; Gabon was edged by Ivory Coast in the group stage.
Gabon had the best performance at the group stages among the four teams here. They bagged 25 points, seven more than Nigeria, and they will hope to carry on the same way here.
Les Pantheres lost just once in the groups, but their eight wins in 10 weren’t enough to steer them past an unbeaten Ivory Coast. Here they will be chasing a first-ever World Cup appearance.
The last time these two nations faced off was two decades ago, and in the five previous meetings, Gabon managed just one win. However, they come here unbeaten in the last five matches, winning four.

Nigeria & Gabon Squad Analysis
Nigeria rarely had a full-strength team during the group stages, and they particularly struggled without Victor Osimhen. With the forward unavailable, Nigeria managed four points from a possible 15.
Now he is available, and Nigeria will be a much stronger outfit, with the Galatasaray forward enjoying fine form. He recently scored three in the Champions League.
A potent Nigerian attack will have Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Sammy Chukwueze. There’s, however, sad news in that Ola Aina is still out injured while Semi Ajayi is suspended.
Aubameyang and Bouanga acconted for Gabon's 15 goals in the group stage.
For Gabon, the first name on the team sheet will be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s. The Marseille forward is back from suspension and will hope to make up for lost time.
In his last outing, he scored four against Gambia in Nairobi. He will be relied upon, and supporting him will be another prolific forward in Denis Bouanga, who had eight goals in the group stage.
That was one more goal than Aubameyang’s tally.

Our Nigeria vs Gabon Prediction
Nigeria looks like the stronger side coming into this match, and they have the head-to-head advantage against Gabon. However, they struggled a bit in the group stage matches, and Gabon will look at that for motivation.
While Gabon have a prolific forward line, their group stage matches were defined by their defensive acumen. The Panthers comes into this match having managed four clean sheets in the last five matches. Nigeria hasn't been conceding a lot either, and our prediction for Nigeria v Gabon is for less than 2.5 goals.
Nigeria vs Gabon - Other Interesting Predictions
Nigeria to win
Nigeria struggled in the early stages of the group stages, and especially when Victor Osimhen was unavailable. However, they got their act right in time and came here unbeaten in six competitive matches.
While Gabon have been doing well too, we feel a full-strength Nigeria team will be a handful for the Panthers. Historically, Nigeria have been on top in this fixture, and we will be backing the same here. So, our second prediction for the match is for Nigeria to win.
