Marseille - Newcastle: Form Analysis
Marseille have failed to carry their domestic form into Europe and will only be seeking their second win in the Champions League. They beat Ajax in matchday two action, recovering from a 2-1 loss at Real Madrid.
They, however, slumped to two defeats in the next two games, against Sporting and Atalanta. The French giants come into this game off the back of a 5-1 Ligue 1 win against Nice.
It was a third straight win in the league, taking them temporarily to the top of the standings. Being winless in their latest 12 matches against English teams means the situation may not change this week.
Newcastle United have only lost twice in 13 away group/league stage matches in Europe.
Marseille’s state will be further complicated by the fact their opponents, Newcastle United, have had a rather impressive run against French sides. The Magpies have only lost two of their previous nine matches against Ligue 1 teams.
The other seven ended in three wins and four draws. However, inexperience at this level is the one factor that may not work for the English side.
This is Newcastle’s only fourth season in the Champions League and the second in 22 years. They will be well motivated for this game after their weekend 2-1 win over Manchester City.
The visitors will be tested defensively after keeping three straight clean sheets in the Champions League.
