Karen Khachanov reached the quarter-finals of the China Open in his last tournament. The 24th seed will hope for another good run in the hard court Shanghai Masters and faces Marcos Giron in round two. Time for our match prediction.
Khachanov is 25th in the latest ranking list and a couple of places below that in the ATP Race. He'd been having form problems before reaching the last eight in Beijing. Three successive matches had been lost and that included the marathon five-setter with Dan Evans in the US Open.
He showed improved form before losing to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz with wins over Roberto Carballes Baena and Francisco Cerundolo. Earlier this year he reached the last four in Marseille and then won the Doha hard court tournament.
The latest ranking list has Marcos Giron in 47th place. The American was a career-high 37th just two months ago. He won the Hall of Fame Open grass court tournament in July but totally failed to build on that back on hard courts.
The 31-year-old lost five matches in a row (one on clay at the Paris Olympics) before finally getting a win in the first round of this tournament. Giron defeated qualifier Li Tu in straight sets. Only one game was dropped in the first but the second went all the way to a tie-break.
