Jerome Kym has won his first two matches and, in the process, set a new personal record at a major. The Swiss player had never competed in the main draw of a Slam tournament until this week. He began his tournament with a four-set victory over Ethan Quinn.
Kym, who is facing a top 10 player for the first time, then fought from a set down to eliminate Brandon Nakashima 3-2. He won in five sets against the 30th seed and crowd favourite to improve to 24-17 and jump to 151st in the live ranking.
Taylor Fritz eliminated the qualifier Lloyd Harris in four sets to advance to this round. The American, who won his first round tie in straights, battled from being 1-0 down to win.
He has now won eight of nine duels at Flushing Meadows since last year’s showpiece. Fritz lost in the final last season and is defending 1,300 points.
The world number four, who has two Singles titles to his name, has won 40 matches for the fourth consecutive year.
