The final round of group-stage matches will see Japan Women will take on Spain Women in Group C of the Women’s World Cup on Monday. Spain currently lead the group with a better goal difference. The Spaniards got their tournament off to an excellent start, beating Costa Rica 3-0 in their opening match before going on to demolish the Zambians 5-0 last Wednesday. With those results, Spain are now the highest-scoring team in the competition with eight, while they are also yet to concede a single goal. In fact, if you look back over their results in the build-up to the tournament, Spain have not conceded a goal in their last six matches in all competitions and have scored 29 in that time. Spain lost just one of their last 15 matches in all competitions and are the highest-ranked team in the group at sixth. This will be their biggest test of the competition so far, but they will want to keep hold of the top spot heading into the knockout stages. 

Meanwhile, 11th-ranked Japan have an almost identical record to their opponents but are just one goal behind. They opened their tournament with a 5-0 over Zambia and followed that with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica last week. With those results, Japan are the second-highest-scoring team so far and are on a three-match winning streak in all competitions, having beaten Panama 5-0 in a friendly match earlier this month. Over their last ten matches, Japan have won five and lost five, though all their losses were against higher-ranked opponents. Japan won the World Cup in 2011 and came runner-up in 2015. However, they have never beaten Spain in four previous attempts, losing three and drawing one. Their most recent encounter ended 1-0 in a friendly last year. Both these sides have already qualified for the next round.
