Third seed Jannik Sinner bids to extend his record this year to 14-0. He takes on the 25th seed Jan-Lennard Struff for a place in the last 16 of the Masters 1000 tournament at Indian Wells. Sinner has only played a couple of tournaments this year but both ended with him lifting the trophy. That included winning the Australian Open (an outdoor hard court event just like this one) and then going indoors to win the title in Rotterdam. Sinner has won 20 of his last 21 singles matches with only Novak Djokovic beating him. The Italian beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round of this tournament after receiving a bye in the first. He only dropped three games against the Australian, all in the first set. Sinner has earned more ranking points than any other player this year. In the overall rankings he's up to second in the live list.

25th seeded Jan-Lennard Struff had a tougher time in round two. He had to come from behind to get past unseeded Borna Coric. The first set was lost on a tie-break but he won the second and then clinched the match via another tie-break. The German was ranked 25th when this Masters 1000 tournament started. He's up a place in the live rankings, three adrift of his career high. It's not been a great year for him so far though.
