Unseeded Jack Draper will take on 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of the US Open on Thursday. The winner here will next play either John Isner or Michael Mmoh. Draper looked sharp in his straight-sets win over Radu Albot in the first round. The match lasted slightly over two hours with Draper losing eight games. Making his second main draw appearance here, Draper will hope to surpass his third-round finish in his debut last season. The Briton has been plagued by injuries all through 2023 which has restricted him to just 23 matches. He has won 14 of those fixtures with 11 of his wins coming on hard court. Hubert Hurkacz has defeated Draper in both their encounters to date. The latest meeting came back in April at Monte-Carlo. Both matches have seen at least one tiebreak so Hurkacz will know what he is up against despite Draper’s fitness issues. The former world number nine is up one place to 16th in the live ranking after his first-round win. Hurkacz was forced to come back from two sets down against Marc-Andrea Husler to win in five. The match, which lasted for three hours and 13 minutes, was his 32nd win of the season and 16th on hard court. Hurkacz has won one title in 2023. He is making his sixth appearance in this major and has yet to advance past the second round.
