Round 5 of 14 in the Currie Cup will get underway this week, and in the final match of the weekend, we will see the Golden Lions take on the Free State Cheetahs at Ellis Park Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The hosts are currently in third place on the Currie Cup table, with 13 points after the first four matches, six points behind the Pumas at the top, and three above the Sharks in fourth. After a poor start to the tournament, where they lost their two opening matches, the Golden Lions bounced back well, beating the Griffons 41-26 last month and followed up with a 34-22 win against the Sharks last weekend. Despite their good form in recent weeks, the Lions will know that the Cheetahs are heavily fancied to win this one and will need to be at their absolute best to come away with anything from this one. 

The Free State Cheetahs, meanwhile, will return from the European Challenge Cup competition, where they suffered a 36-21 defeat to RC Toulon last weekend and will be looking to build on their good start in this tournament with a win here. The visitors are currently in second place after the first four matches with 15 points and a record of three wins and a loss. The Cheetahs won their opening three matches, picking up a bonus point in each but saw their unbeaten run crash to a halt in their last match against the Pumas, where they were put to the sword and came out on the wrong side of a 61-21 scoreline. With several players expected to rejoin the domestic cup squad for this match, the Cheetahs will want to put last week’s defeat behind them with a solid display at Ellis Park.
