Gael Monfils looks to continue his good run of form when facing 33rd seed Jordan Thompson in the Miami Open. This is a second round match in the outdoor hard court which is a Masters 1000 tournament. For the winner, there's a match in the last 32 against Spanish opposition, either unseeded Roberto Carballes Baena or top seed Carlos Alcaraz. Monfiils is up to 44th in the live rankings after he beat Dusan Lajovic in straight sets in round one. He's following up his run to the last 16 at Indian Wells where he had good wins over seeded players Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie. His form on outdoor hard courts is impressive with him also making it to the semi-fnals in Doha. 

Jordan Thompson leads Gael Monfils 1-0 in previous meetings. The only match between the pair was at Indian Wells last year on an outdoor hard court. Thompson won that for the loss of only four games. He is the 33rd seed for this tournament earning a seeded position after withdrawals. The Australian's best performance in Miami was five years ago when beating seeded players Karen Khachanov and Grigor Dimitrov to reach round four. He hasn't got past round two since then. He's currently 34th in the world so on the fringes of being a seeded player at future Grand Slams. In the Live ATP Race, he's in 22nd place thanks to an outdoor title win in Los Cobos. Before that he also got to the last four in Brisbane and two quarter finals in Dallas and Delray Beach, all on outdoor hard courts. It's not gone as well of late though with his last two matches being lost. Monfils is in good form and can win this match.
