France and Portugal will meet in the main round of the 2026 European Handball Championships on Saturday afternoon. France are fourth in Group I, while Portugal are second. Let’s get into the match prediction.
France surged into the main round by winning all of their preliminary round matches, beating Czechia 42-28 and Ukraine 46-26 before edging Norway 38-34 in their final match.
However, they suffered their first loss of the competition earlier this week, beaten 32-29 by Denmark despite a strong performance from Aymeric Minne with seven goals.
That result brought an end to France’s 11-match win streak that dated back to the World Championships last year. However, they have won their last two matches against their upcoming opponent.
Meanwhile, Portugal recorded a 40-34 victory over Romania and a 31-29 win against Denmark, either side of a thrilling 29-29 draw with North Macedonia in the preliminary round of the competition.
They lost their first match in the main round, 32-30 to Denmark. Francisco Coast is currently the top scorer in this year’s Euro Championship, now on 39 goals after four games across both rounds.
Portugal have won six of their last 10 matches (D2 L2). Their last victory against France was back in 2021 at the Olympic Games.
