After an excellent 2025 season, there is a growing belief among English fans that this will be the year that their team return to the summit of the Six Nations and win their first title under Gregor Townend. The hosts have won five of their last six matches against this opponent, including a 68-14 hammering in Cardiff last year.
Wales, on the other hand, are hoping to open a new chapter under the guidance of Steve Tandy. The former Ospreys boss has had two full months to imprint his philosophy since the departure of Warren Gatland, who oversaw back-to-back Wooden Spoon campaigns in this competition (2024 and 2025). England’s only loss in last year’s Six Nations came in the opening round against Ireland, and that result proved decisive as it denied them the title, with France edging the Championship by a single point.
Since then, though, the Red Rose have been one of the most impressive teams in world rugby, stringing together 11 straight wins capped off with victories over New Zealand and Argentina in the Autumn Nations Series.
One key to the team’s improvement over the past year is their kicking game, as they averaged the most kicks (35.7) and gained the most kicking metres (959) per game of any Tier 1 nation in 2025.
England have won their last eight home games against Wales in all competitions!
Meanwhile, 2025 was an absolute nightmare for Wales, as they were handed the Six Nations Wooden Spoon for a second successive campaign. They only won two games in the year, both against Japan.
Among Tier 1 nations, the Dragon ranked last for tries scored, line breaks, attacking entries and turnovers won. They also shipped the most tries of such nations and conceded the most penalties.
Tandy took charge of the team ahead of the Autumn Nations Series, but lost three of his first four games, including a record-breaking 73-0 defeat to the Springboks in the season final in Cardiff.

England were handed a significant setback the day before this match, with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso suffering an injury during practice. Tom Roebuck has been brought in as his replacement.
With Borthwick expected to prioritise the kicking game in this competition, George Ford will be a key figure at fly-half. Centres Tommy Freeman and Fraser Dingwall will be looking to pressure the Wales backline under the high ball.
Maro Itoje returned from the funeral of his mother earlier this week and has been named on the bench, which sees Ollie Chessum and Alex Coles start the match as the lock pairing.

The Welsh speedster returned to international rugby last November after spending almost two years in the NFL. He has now been moved to full-back after starting on the wing against Japan and the All Blacks.
Another player set to make his return to the Welsh team is Josh McLeod, who has not featured since July last year, and he goes straight into the second row, alongside Alex Mann, Adam Beard and Dafydd Jenkins.
Eddie James and Ben Thomas form the centre pairing, while Dan Edwards will be entrusted with kicking duty at fly-half. Bath youngster Louis Hennessey has not made the matchday 23.
