England finished top of their pool two points ahead of France and now face Australia in the last eight. Whether they would have kept that position if the game against France hadn't been cancelled remains to be seen, chances are they would have. The fact the French match didn't take place due to the weather could help England. Their last game was played on October 5th, so by the time this quarter final against Australia comes along, they will have had a two-week break while their opponents last played on the 11th. England come into this quarter final having won all of their games played so far in this tournament. They have scored 119 points in four games and only conceded 20. 2003 saw them win this trophy and they lost in the 2007 final, since then though they have failed to get past the last eight. At least they made it out of their pool this time. England have played the Australians 50 times in the past, 24 have been won, 25 lost and there was one draw. The last six meetings over the past four years have all been won by England, the most recent being a 37-18 home win last November.

Australia finished second behind Wales in Pool D. They won four out of five with only the Welsh side beating them but they have not been that impressive. Australia's most recent match was a 27-8 win over Georgia. That's the Georgia that lost by 35 points to Fiji and 29 to Wales. England expect to have Billy Vunipola fit for this game and he can help them to a win over the Australians.
