Stormers XXIII are set for a tough clash as they open their 2026 Currie Cup campaign by welcoming defending champions Suzuki Griquas to Cape Town Stadium on Friday. They have lost each of their last eight encounters against Suzuki Griquas, making us back the away team in our prediction.

Stormers XXIII rounded up their 2025 Currie Cup on a strong note by defeating Boland Cavaliers 40–22. However, prior to that victory, they had suffered six losses on the bounce, four by heavy margins, and finishing bottom of the standings with just six points. 

Tom Dawson-Squibb's side will look to put up a stronger showing this season, with an opening matchup against defending champions offering an ideal test of their credentials. However, they enter this contest having lost four of their last six home matches dating back to 2024.

Suzuki Griquas have established themselves as South Africa's domestic rugby powerhouse since 2022. The Peacock Blues crowned their meteoric rise by clinching the Currie Cup title last season, ending a 55-year wait for the coveted trophy. 

Pieter Bergh's charges will aim for a strong start with hopes of retaining the title. They head into this clash with seven wins from their last nine Currie Cup matches, including a title-clinching 27–25 victory over Lions in the final last season, and have swept all eight of their previous meetings against Stormers XXIII.
