Defending champion Cori Gauff is up against Jessice Pegula in her opening 2025 WTA Finals round-robin group match. Gauff is seeded third for this indoor hard court tournament in Riyadh, two places above her opponent. Here's our match prediction.

Gauff won this title last year and beat Pegula at this stage. They met again recently with Gauff beating Pegula in the final of the Wuhan tournament last month. The 21-year-old trails Pegula 4-3 in previous meetings but has won the last two.
This year has seen Gauff win 29 of her 38 hard court matches with one title won on this surface.
Jessica Pegula was a finalist in this tournament in 2023 but lost at this stage last year. The 31-year-old has a 36-14 hard court record in 2025 with one title won in March and three other finals reached. All three of her WTA titles this year came on different surfaces.
Pegula has made it to at least the semi-finals in each of her last three hard court tournaments. Eight successive three-setters had been played before losing in straight sets to Gauff in the Wuhan final.
