Casper Ruud takes on Juncheng Shang in round three of the US Open. Ruud is the eighth seed and only once has he made it past round three of this hard court Grand Slam. Can he make it to round four? Here's our match prediction.
His one time past round three in New York was two years ago when he went on to lose to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Ruud is eighth in the live rankings but three places higher in the ATP Race.
He owes his high ranking to his clay court performances with two titles won this year and another final reached. On hard courts he has had some good results though in 2024. Finals in Los Cabos and Acapulco have been reached this year.
So far in New York, Ruud has only dropped one set. After beating a qualifier in round one, he was taken to four sets by Gael Monfils with two of the sets being decided by tie-breaks. This is his first match against Shang.
Juncheng Shang is now 65th in the live rankings and that's a new career high for him. The 19-year-old is playing in the main draw of this tournament for the first time. Last year he lost in the final qualifying round.
Given automatic entry into the main draw this year, he had a tough first round match. He beat 27th seeded Alexander Bublik after trailing two sets to one. He finally won 6-4 in the final set to make it into round two.
It was a lot smoother in the second round as he beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets. This year has seen him reach two hard court semi-finals in Hong Kong and Atlanta and he's up to 54th in the ATP Live Race.
