Brenda Fruhvirtova will hope to continue with her excellent Australian Open start when she battles second seed Aryna Sabalenka next. The winner here will go on to play either Rebeka Masarova or Lesia Tsurenko in the third round. Brenda Fruhvirtova is having quite the tournament here and has already set a new personal record by advancing to this round. It is her best-ever record at a Grand Slam and she will be eager to keep this going. The 16-year-old defeated Ana Bogdan, a player ranked 30 places above her in the WTA, in three sets in the first round. She has now won the four matches she has played in Melbourne after starting the tournament in the qualifying rounds. Her excellent performance here has propelled her into the top 100 for the first time. She is now ranked 95th in the world ranking.

Aryna Sabalenka had a dominant start to the defence of her Melbourne title. She lost only one game in her first-round opener against the qualifier Ella Seidel and won the match inside an hour. The current world number two triumphed here last season to begin a dominant 2023 campaign. She would go on to make at least the semifinals in all other majors and finished as runner-up at the US Open. 2023 was the Belarussian’s best-ever tour campaign and at one point saw her ascend to world number one for the first time in her career. Sabalenka has won five of the six matches she has played this year and finished as runner-up in Brisbane.
