Aston Villa begin their Europa League campaign and would love a confidence boosting victory. Their first match in the league phase of this competition is a home match against Bologna. Can the Villans get a first win of the season? Time for our match prediction.
Villa so nearly qualified for the Champions League and only missed out on goal difference. As you will read in the form section of this preview, Unai Emery's side has made a poor start to the season. Six league and cup games have failed to produce a win and just two goals have been scored by the midlands club, neither by any of their strikers. After reaching the Champions League quarter-finals last season, they'll be hoping for a good run in this competition.
Bologna are playing Villa for the second successive season. The Red and Blues were beaten 2-0 at Villa Park last season at this stage of the Champions League. They have made a mixed start to their Serie A season but did win at the weekend.

Aston Villa - Bologna: Form Analysis
Aston Villa are 18th in the Premier League after the first five games of the season. They are also already out of the Carabao Cup, losing on penalties to Brentford last week. Only three points have been earned by them in the Premier League, all from draws.
The weekend saw them draw 1-1 at Sunderland. At least they managed to score their first league goal of the season but the Lions are only a point from safety. They will be desperate to recapture the form that was shown last season.
Villa had impressive home form in Europe last season.
Home form in Europe was highly impressive last season with five wins and a draw. That included beating Bayern Munich and holding eventual champions PSG to a draw. This season they have had two home fixtures with a draw and a defeat and no goals scored.
Bologna won the Coppa Italia last season and finished ninth in Serie A (compared to Villa's sixth place Premier League finish). They are 11th in Serie A after the first four games of the season with two wins and a couple of defeats. Both losses were 1-0 away defeats.
Last weekend saw them beat Genoa 2-1 at home after trailing in that match. Each of their last three away fixtures have had under 2.5 goals scored in them. They only won one Champions League match last season, finishing 28th in the league phase.

Aston Villa & Bologna Squad Analysis
Aston Villa may have come home from Sunderland with a point at the weekend but still didn't impress their coach. Unai Emery described his team as "lazy" and it'll be interesting to see what side he puts out for this Europa League fixture.
Villa are expected to make changes for this game.
Several changes are expected to be made for this match. Ross Barkley is ineligible for this competition and Boubacar Kamara has only just made his return to the side and may be saved for the weekend.
Villa need to start converting chances because the longer their strikers go without scoring, the further their confidence will drop. Ollie Watkins may make way for Donyell Malen.Harvey Elliott has actually scored for Villa this season and may well start in midfield as may Jadon Sancho.
Just like their opponents, Bologna haven't found scoring goals that easy this season. At least they got a couple at the weekend and the return of Santiago Castro has been a boost for them. He scored in their last game and will be a threat for the Serie A club.
Riccardio Orsolini scored the winner at the weekend, though it was from the penalty spot. He is expected to be playing up front for Bologna who will want to avoid a repeat of the defeat they suffered at Villa Park last season. A point would be a good start for them.
