Novak Djokovic is just three wins away from a record-extending tenth Australian Open men's singles title. The fourth seed takes on Andrey Rublev (seeded one place below him) for a place in the semi-finals. The winner of this quarter final will face an unseeded American in the last four, either Ben Shelton or Tommy Paul. Djokovic is up to third in the live rankings and a win here will see him climb to second. If he wins this Australian Open, he'll be back at the top of the rankings which is where he belongs. Djokovic hasn't lost a match in the Australian Open since 2018, winning on each of his last three visits. It's 15 years since his first title win in Melbourne. Already this year he's won the first of the Adelaide International tournaments, making it five titles in his last six events. This tournament has seen him drop just one set.
Andrey Rublev is in his seventh Grand Slam quarter final and his second in Australia. He's yet to reach the last four of a Grand Slam and has an immensely tough task ahead of him here. He has won one of his three previous matches against Djokovic but that was on clay in Belgrade last year. The other two matches were won by Djokovic and both were on hard courts with Rublev only winning five games in each three-set match. Rublev began this tournament ranked sixth and is up to fifth in the live list. 2023 didn't start well for him with him unable to win a match in either of the two Adelaide tournaments. He's fared better in Melbourne but had to go to a fifth set to get past ninth seed Holger Rune in the last 16. Back Djokovic to win this in straight sets, possibly needing a tie-break in one of them.
