Marin Cilic is the 20th seed at Roland Garros and bids to beat another top ten player when taking on seventh seeded Andrey Rublev. Monday saw the world number 23 get a highly impressive win over second seeded Daniil Medvedev for the loss of just seven games. That was his third straight sets win in this tournament with only Marton Fucscovics winning a set against him. Cilic is in his third French Open quarter final but this is his first since 2018. It's also his first last eight appearance in any Grand Slam since the 2018 US Open. That year saw him ranked as high as third and he's now 19th in the live rankings. Cilic trails Rublev 4-2 in previous meetings. However, he won their only match on clay and also recorded a victory over him in this year's Australian Open.

Like his opponent, Andrey Rublev has never reached the last four at Roland Garros. However, for Rublev he is yet to reach the semi-final of any Grand Slam event. This is his second quarter final at Roland Garros (the other was two years ago) and his fifth overall. He has won one clay court tournament this year. That was the Serbia Open in Belgrade where he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. It's not been an easy route to the last eight for Rublev. He's had three matches go to four sets and then went a set down to Jannik Sinner in the last 16. He won the second set and was 2-0 up in set three when a left knee injury caused his opponent to retire. He may well need to play a lot better to get past the in-form Cilic. Go for Cilic to win this and make the semi-final for the first time.
