Germany vs. Paraguay: Can Die Mannschaft Avoid Another World Cup Shock?

Germany’s Wake-Up Call Before the Knockout Stage
Germany may have lived up to expectations for the 2026 World Cup by progressing to the knockout rounds, but their route to the Round of 32 ended far less convincingly than it began.
After kicking off their campaign with a commanding 7-1 victory over Curaçao in their opening match, Die Mannschaft needed a stoppage-time winner to get past the Ivory Coast before suffering one of the shocks of the tournament, losing 2-1 to Ecuador in their last match of the group stage.
The defeat to Ecuador was the first of Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup tenure and served as a clear reminder that reputations count for little at a World Cup. Following the defeat, the visibly frustrated German head coach said:
"We got off to a great start. Unfortunately, right after scoring, we started committing tactical suicide with our positioning. That makes things difficult. The difference was today that our opponent wanted to win more than us. You could really feel it, especially in the second half. This is why they won, and it was really deserved.”
While our experts are leaning toward a win for Nagelsmann’s side in our Germany vs Paraguay prediction, this will be a stern test for Die Mannschaft against an underdog playing with freedom and confidence. For Germany, the question is simple: respond emphatically or risk another early World Cup exit?
Paraguay’s Defensive Resolve Faces Germany’s Attacking Firepower

Paraguay come into the Round of 32 with momentum and belief, having recovered impressively from a difficult start - losing their opening match of the tournament 4-1 to the USA, which confirmed our 2026 World Cup predictions - to book their place in the knockout rounds.
Defensive organisation has long been synonymous with Paraguayan football, and under the guidance of Gustavo Alfaro, La Albirroja have rediscovered that traditional strength, while adding a more composed and progressive approach in possession.
Unlike Germany, Paraguay are not expected to dictate the tempo of the match. Instead, Alfaro is expected to demand a compact defensive block that keeps the space between the lines as narrow as possible and look to frustrate Germany before launching on the counter-attack, as they did in their victory over Türkiye.
Still, containing the German attack, which features the likes of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz, is no mean feat. Nagelsmann’s side ended the group stage as the joint-top-scoring team with 10 goals, alongside the Netherlands and title favourites France.
Germany vs Paraguay: Recent Form and Head-to-Head Record
After suffering an against-the-odds defeat to Slovakia in early September last year, Germany stormed through the rest of their UEFA World Cup qualifiers with five consecutive wins, scoring 16 goals and keeping four clean sheets to top their group.
In the lead-up to the World Cup, Die Mannschaft won all of their friendly games against Switzerland (4-3), Ghana (2-1), Finland (4-0) and the USA (2-1), building up a nine-match win streak before their shock defeat to Ecuador last Friday.
Paraguay, on the other hand, secured their return to football’s grandest stage for the first time since 2010 in South Africa by finishing in sixth place in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers with 28 points (W7 D7 L4), the same tally as Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil.
This will be the third time that Germany and Paraguay cross paths on the international stage. Die Nationalelf holds the advantage, having beaten La Albirroja in the Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup before the teams played to an entertaining 3-3 draw in a friendly in 2013.
