Spain’s search for a first World Cup knockout win since 2010 pits them against Austria, who are in their first World Cup knockout stage game since 1954. This is the newly added last 32 stage of the 2026 edition, and the winner of this game between ‘La Roja’ and ‘Das Team’ will meet either Portugal or Croatia in the next round. While Spain remain one of the tournament favourites, can Austria crack Spain's strong defence and spring a surprise?

An unbeaten run in Group H (W2, D1) saw Spain top that stage, bouncing back from an uninspiring 0-0 draw on matchday one. The reigning European champions are yet to underline their supremacy but are also yet to concede a goal, so they are making things difficult for teams.

A dramatic stoppage-time equaliser on matchday helped Austria hold Algeria and seal second place from Group J (W1, D1, L1). This marks the first time since 1982 that the Austrians are advancing beyond the initial group stage, but will they make it count by upsetting the fancied Spaniards? Dive deep into our analysis and match predictions.

Spain - Austria: Form Analysis

A narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay on matchday three was enough for Spain to seal top place in the group, after taking four points from the first two games. They are yet to concede a goal in this tournament, although their famed attack is yet to fire.

Spain lost at the first knockout stage in the last two editions, which could be a minor concern. A recent run of results will give them confidence, though, as ‘La Roja’ have gone unbeaten in their last 33 games within regulation time (W23, D10).

Spain have faced just 26 shots across their last four World Cup games.

Austria played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Algeria on matchday three, taking both teams to the knockouts and fuelling theories of conspiracy to keep Iran out. Regardless, the Austrians are in their first knockout stage game since 1954 and will look to make the most of this rare opportunity.

‘Das Team’ were beaten just once in their last eight matches (W5, D2, L1), which was against Argentina on matchday two of this tournament. That result is perhaps a concern as Austria could struggle against another top team.

Spain & Austria Squad Analysis

Yeremy Pino suffered a collarbone fracture against Uruguay and is likely to be ruled out of the World Cup for Spain. Nico Williams also suffered a groin injury and is a doubt here, while Victor Munoz continues to be sidelined. There are also concerns over Lamine Yamal’s fitness to play the entire game.

Spain are likely to stick to their 4-2-3-1 formation unless they want to be aggressive and line up in the 4-3-3 system they used against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Mikel Oyarzabal could be their main striker, having already scored two and assisted one goal in this tournament.

Oyarzabal has 15 goals and seven assists in his last 15 starts for Spain.

Austria seem to have no new injury concerns and will look to maximize their use of star forward Marko Arnautovic. He scored twice in this tournament but started only once, and played only 112 minutes.

If Arnautovic starts, he would be their lone striker in their favoured 4-2-3-1 system, although they have shown enough flexibility to transform into a 4-1-3-2 dynamic system.

Our Spain vs Austria Prediction

Spain were one of the pre-tournament favourites, and although they haven’t overwhelmed their opponents, an unbeaten run to the knockouts should give them confidence. They are yet to concede a goal, and four of their five tournament goals have come in a single game against Saudi Arabia. Austria have scored six goals in the group games but have failed to find the net against Argentina.

The Spaniards are likely to keep it tight at the back, which is why our Spain vs Austria prediction is less than 2.5 goals.

Spain vs Austria Alternative Predictions

Spain wins

Odds 1.33

Spain and Austria haven’t played each other since a friendly in 2009, which somewhat overshadows Spain’s recent record of two consecutive wins with a four-goal margin each time. Austria have struggled to break through Argentina in the group phase of this tournament, and this Spanish team could throw a similar experience for them. Back Spain to win.
