Bookmakers: Who Will Win the 2022 AFCON ?
Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Algeria... the current champions of Africa, all will be contenders for the title this year. Soccer is a religion in Africa and this continent has produced incredibly talented footballers in recent years. At the upcoming Africa Cup, too, we are going to see big stars like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Edouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez. A few weeks of top event for soccer fans and those who like to bet on soccer. As for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON/CAN) predictions, we see that the betting agencies have recently presented their favorites on their sports betting sites. Below are their main favorites for winning this tournament..
Senegal, Egypt, Algeria: the three top favourites
It's no big surprise that Aliou Cissé's Senegal is listed as the favorite by the various soccer betting sites. Senegal has never won the Africa Cup, but was very close with a final spot during the previous African Cup. This year Senegal seems stronger than ever. Among the star players we see Edouard Mendy (Chelsea), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Bouna Sarr (Bayern), Gana Gueye (PSG), Papa Mata Sarr (Metz), Sadio Mané (Liverpool) and Ismaïila Sarr (Watford). A selection overflowing with quality that will undoubtedly be among the contenders in Cameroon.
With the lowest odds (4/1 average), Senegal is the big favorite at this Africa Cup of Nations 2022. Right behind Senegal we find Egypt and Algeria. These are respectively the countries with the most titles and the reigning champions. That much is expected of Egypt and Algeria is again not out of the blue.
Egypt can rely on experience and of course the big star of the African continent: Mohamed Salah. Algeria can count on a strong collective with some top players like Mahrez, Slimani and Mandi. The odds for Egypt and Algeria are currently on average 6/1 for Egypt and on average 7/1 for Algeria. So two countries to keep an eye on. In any case, it would not be surprising if the eventual winner of the Africa Cup would be one of these three countries.
And the other countries?
Behind Senegal, Egypt and Algeria, there are a number of countries that seem to have little in common. Sébastien Haller's Ivory Coast and Maduka Okoye's Nigeria are among the strong outsiders, just ahead of hosts Cameroon and Morocco of national coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who has no room in his squad for Hakim Ziyech and Noussair Mazraoui. Ghana, Tunisia and Mali are the countries that come next, while the least is expected of Sierra Leone, Sudan, The Comoros, Mauritania, Malawi and Equatorial Guinea (with odds of over 300/1 for the title).
This means that few so-called connoisseurs expect a surprise, like Zambia's final win in 2012. Or could a smaller footballing nation spring a surprise at this edition? It's up to you which country you want to bet on.
