The EuroLeague has never had a SuperCup before today. The inaugural edition begins this evening at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, with four teams competing across two days in a Final Four format. Reigning champions Olympiacos face 2025 winners Fenerbahce in the first semi-final. Dubai Basketball, the first Middle Eastern club ever to compete in the EuroLeague, takes on 11-time champions Real Madrid in the second.

A New Competition Opens a New Era

The SuperCup was approved at the EuroLeague Basketball Shareholders General Assembly in July and announced officially on August 24 as part of a multi-year partnership between EuroLeague Basketball and Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism.

The relationship builds on the 2025 EuroLeague Final Four, which was also held at Etihad Arena. The format mirrors the Final Four:

  • Two semi-finals tonight, 
  • A third-place match, and
  • A championship final tomorrow.

And for the winner, they become the first team to hold a trophy that did not exist three months ago. 

The EuroLeague regular season tips off on September 24, one week from today, making this the official curtain raiser for the 2026-27 campaign.

Semi-Final 1: Olympiacos vs Fenerbahce

Interestingly, the opening semi-final could be the most exciting, as it presents a rematch of the two most recent EuroLeague champions. Olympiacos won their fourth title in May, beating Real Madrid 92-85 in the final in Athens. Sasha 

Vezenkov took the Season MVP award, while Evan Fournier was named Final Four MVP after a tournament where Mario Hezonja scored 44 points across the two days.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce were the 2024-25 champions and reached the Final Four again last season before being eliminated. The two clubs now meet in a match that carries genuine competitive weight despite its preseason billing.

Semi-Final 2: Dubai Basketball vs Real Madrid

This is the match that tells the bigger story. Dubai Basketball are the first Middle Eastern club to compete in the EuroLeague, admitted as part of the league's expansion to 20 teams for 2026-27.

What’s more, they play under head coach Xavi Pascual, the former Barcelona and Zenit coach who brings significant European pedigree to the project. And tonight's semi-final against Real Madrid is the club’s first competitive appearance.

Captain Klemen Prepelic leads a roster that fans have not yet seen in action, and the SuperCup gives Pascual a two-game window to test combinations before the regular season begins.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, arrive under new head coach Pedro Martinez, who was named EuroLeague Coach of the Year last season and makes his official debut on the Madrid bench tonight.

The Bigger Picture: Expansion, Franchises and New Markets

The SuperCup is one piece of a broader transformation. The EuroLeague has expanded from 18 to 20 teams for 2026-27, with plans to reach 24 by 2027-28.

Dubai Basketball and three other clubs, Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv, Besiktas and Paris Basketball, all join the league this season.

The competition is also moving toward a franchise model:

  • Real Madrid have signed a new 10-year license, and the remaining clubs are expected to follow.
  • The SuperCup itself, staged in Abu Dhabi with a purpose-built partnership

And an 18,000-seat arena is only a signal of where European basketball sees its commercial future.
