Fourth seed Elena Rybakina and the unseeded Yulia Putinteva will meet in the quarter-finals of this year’s Madrid Open. The winner will then play Mirra Andreeva or Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the final. Yulia Putintseva has defeated Rybakina both times they have met. This alongside her clay court dominance should have her confident of progressing to the semis. They last squared off three seasons ago with one of their matchups being on clay in Rome. Putintseva is having her best-ever campaign in Madrid. Before this season, she had never gone past the third round here and had in the last two years exited in the second round. The Kazakh defeated 10th seed Daria Kasatkina in three sets in the fourth round. This improved her record to 18-11 and catapulted her 10 places to 40th in the live ranking.

Elena Rybakina is also having her best-ever campaign in Madrid. Before this season, the world number four had never progressed past the third round. She had twice in three appearances lost in the second. Rybakina has been in exceptional form once again and so far has won 29 of the 33 matches she has contested. This has resulted in five finals and three titles. The Kazakh arrived in Madrid after triumphing on clay in Charleston and is currently on a seven-match winning run. Rybakina defeated the qualifier Sara Bejlek by the loss of four games in the last round. The 24-year-old is a strong clay court performer and has won three titles, including the WTA 1000 crown in Rome.
