Putintseva saw off qualifier Harriet Dart in three sets to open her quest. That was her first win in Cincinnati since 2022 and equaled her best ever result.
Beating Gauff will see her qualify for the third round for the first time. Putintseva has lost four times in the second round in Cincinnati. The Kazakh is having a strong year and has so far compiled a 32-16 record.
She won the Birmingham title, her first on grass, to end a three-year wait for a tour crown. The 29-year-old has moved up three places in the live ranking and is placed 30th.
Cori Gauff’s win in Cincinnati last season earned her the maiden WTA 1000 crown. This proved the perfect springboard to her title-winning run at the US Open and she will be eager to replicate that same type of form here.
The American has had inconsistency issues in recent weeks and lost three times in her last six outings. The seven-time tour champion is coming off a disappointing third-round exit in Toronto, a tournament in which she had never previously failed to make the quarters.
Gauff, the current world number two, has never lost against Putintseva, winning all three of their previous matchups. This will be the first time Gauff and Putintseva battle outside clay surfaces.
A second-round showdown with either Paula Badosa, Peyton Stearns, Katerina Siniakova, or Anna Kalinskaya awaits the winner.
