Second seed Liudmila Samsonova begins her Korea Open campaign with a second round match against unseeded Veronika Kudermetova. Can the seed make it into the last eight? Read our match prediction.

Samsonova received a bye into the second round of this WTA 500 hard court tournament being staged in Seoul. The Russian is ranked 15th in the world and 23rd in the Live WTA Race.

Up next for the winner could be a match against sixth seed Yulia Putintseva. Samsonova is playing in her first tournament since reaching the fourth round of the US Open where she lost to top seed Iga Swiatek.

Before that, she had made it to the last eight of the hard court tournament played in Cincinnati, eventually being beaten by Aryna Sabalenka. One title has been won this year but that was played on grass.

Her best results on hard courts have been reaching the semi-finals in Abu Dhabi. Three hard court titles have been won by her. Last year saw her reach three WTA Tour hard court finals, losing them all.

Veronika Kudermetova leads her opponent 4-2 in previous meetings and 2-1 on hard courts. Three of their last four matches have gone to a final set and another close match is possible in Seoul.

The world number 44 beat Zhang Suai in straight sets in her first round match. Not since April in the clay court tournament played in Charleston has she won two main draw matches in a WTA Tour event. We go for Samsonova to win in three sets.
