Fifth seed Andrey Rublev begins his Rogers Cup campaign in Montreal. The Russian takes on unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in round two. For the winner, the scheduled seeded opponent is Tommy Paul. Here's our match prediction.
Andrey Rublev is the world number eight and after a poor run of form has begun to get better results in recent weeks. On clay he got to the last four in Umag and then reached the quarter-finals of the Washington hard court tournament.
He continues his hard court campaign in Canada this week. He's up to seventh in the live rankings and 11th in the ATP Race. Rublev has won one ATP Tour hard court event this year, winning in Hong Kong right at the start of 2024.
Rublev then reached at least the last eight of his next four tournaments. A return to that kind of form could yet see him in the ATP Tour Finals at the end of this year.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry is the world number 38 but up three places in the live rankings. A seeding at the upcoming US Open can't be ruled out, especially if he has a good run in Montreal. The Argentinian beat Nicolas Jarry in round one.
He had to go to three sets to clinch the victory, losing the second. Both the first two sets went to a tie-break. Etcheverry has mainly played on clay this year and before this week had only won two out of six hard court matches in 2024. We tip Rublev to win in straight sets.
