European champions Sweden have already qualified for the 2023 Men's World Handball Championships quarter finals. They top Group II with a maximum eight points and are three ahead of opponents Portugal. The quarter finals could see them face defending world champions Denmark if they can clinch second place in their group. The Swedes have won all five of their matches in these championships with their most recent win being against Iceland. With the group won, there is a possibility they will rest a few players ahead of their quarter final. They have a strong squad though and a tenth straight win is a distinct possibility here.

Portugal have everything to play for in this game against Sweden. They are second in the group but only a point ahead of Iceland and Hungary. A win over Sweden will take them into the last eight but a draw or loss would be bad news for them. Iceland beat Portugal in the preliminary round so if the points end level, that would see Portugal out of the tournament. They will know exactly what needs to be achieved as the other two possible quarter finalists play earlier in the day so Portugal could start this game in fourth place. So far in these world championships, Portugal have won three and drawn one after that disappointing loss to Iceland in their opening match of the tournament. This is a tough match though and Sweden should be able to get the win.
