La Rochelle (aka Stade Rochelais) continue their bid to retain the European Rugby Champions Cup. They travel to Stomers in the last 16 with the winners facing either Leinster or Leicester Tigers in the quarterfinals. The French side are attempting to join Toulon as the only team to win this competition three years in a row. They made a slow start in their defence of the title, losing their two opening pool games to Leicester and at their opponents in this game. Wins at home to Leicester and at Sale Sharks saw them finish third in Pool D and get through to the knockout stages. La Rochelle led at Stormers in that pool match but ended up losing by a single point. They are fifth in this season's Top 14 but have been struggling on the road with their last four games being lost. Nine of their ten away games in Top 14 this season have ended in defeat.

Stormers finished second in Pool D with three of their four matches being won. That's seen them seeded seventh for the knockout stages, three places ahead of their opponents. Stormers also got off to a poor start in this competition with an away loss at Leicester. They recovered well with wins over La Rochelle, Sale and Stade Francais Paris. Stormers are currently fifth in the United Rugby Championship and have won all six of their home games in that competition. Eight of their last nine games have been won and all but one of their last nine at home have ended in victory. This will be a tough match but the visitors can put their experience to good use and get a narrow win.
