Can Stan Wawrinka finally win his first hard court match of the year? To do so he has to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in round one of the Shanghai Masters. Read our match prediction below.

Wawrinka is currently down at 236th in the live rankings and is struggling for form at present. Five of his last six matches have ended in defeat and he's only 261st in the ATP Live Race with only six of his 21 matches won this year.

None of those wins have come on hard courts. This is only his fifth match on this surface in 2024 and most recently lost to lucky loser Roman Safiullin in the China Open first round last week.

The 39-year-old received a wild card to play in this  tournament but has now failed to win a set in each of his last three matches. 

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard also lost in the China Open first round. He probably wasn't expecting to win in Beijing having drawn Carlos Alcaraz in his opening match. Perricard lost that match in straight sets but did win eight games. 

The Frenchman is 50th in the live rankings and three places higher in the ATP Race. He hasn't had a good year on hard courts on the ATP Tour this year. However, on the Challenger Tour, the 21-year-old has won three tournaments on this surface.

We tip Perricard to beat Wawrinka and set up a second round match against the 28th seed Flavio Cobolli.
